Life is uncertain and now with the Covid-19 pandemic, uncertainty over our finances, the economy, employment, relationships, as well as our mental and physical health has been exacerbated. Our future has become uncertain!

As human beings, we crave predictability which in turn gives us our sense of security and control. Fear and uncertainty can leave us feeling fearful, anxious, and powerless over our lives. It can drain us emotionally and draw us into a negative spiral of endless “what-ifs” and worst-case scenarios about what tomorrow may bring.

So where is there any certainty? Perhaps it is this very question that can be part of the problem! Psychologically it would be more helpful to rather develop strategies that will empower you to be more tolerant of uncertainty. This can, however, be easier said than done, because changing our attitudes can be challenging. However, in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) we know that our thoughts, feelings, and actions are all interconnected and that if you change one, you can change the others. One of the best ways to learn to become more tolerant of uncertainty is to start acting “as if” you are tolerant of uncertainty. So, as you practice “as if” you are tolerant of uncertainty you will eventually also allow your thoughts and feelings about uncertainty to positively change.

Ask yourself questions like:
❖ What would I do if I dealt with this situation as if I could overcome it?
❖ Who or what has helped me overcome the uncertainties I experienced before?
❖ Who do I know that has overcome fears and doubts in their lives? What would they do?
❖ What strengths do I have that I can draw on now to get me through this?
❖ Who do I know that will support me?
❖ How will I feel once I have gotten through this?

Sometimes things will not go exactly as planned. Allow for some uncertainty in your life. This is not a sign of failure on your part. Most people who tolerate uncertainty learn that bad things can happen, but they can cope with them.

Lastly, always remind yourself about what has remained certain for you, and what you are grateful for. Keep growing!
